<intro>
On Tuesday morning, running back Kevin Jones was medically cleared to play after tearing ligaments in his left ankle in the exhibition finale against the Browns last season.

On Tuesday afternoon, Jones was informed that he was being released by the Bears. Now he is looking for another job.

Jones was hoping to get another opportunity with the Bears and new coordinator Mike Martz, whom he worked with in Detroit with the Lions when Martz was the coordinator there in 2006 and 2007.

"I'm just thankful for the opportunity the Bears gave me here," Jones said.

Newly signed Chester Taylor will be a co-starter with Matt Forte, according to Martz. With the addition of Taylor, the backfield picture for the Bears was getting quite crowded.

The Bears still have running backs Garrett Wolfe and Kahlil Bell on their roster behind both Forte and Taylor. Veteran special teams standout and career back up Adrian Peterson is not expected to be back.

After being released by the Lions after the 2007 season because of injury, Jones signed with the Bears prior to the 2008 season. After rushing for 109 yards on 34 carries in his first year, Jones missed all of last season after tearing ligaments in his left ankle during the preseason.

Before the 2008 season, Jones signed a one-year, $605,000 contract with the Bears. Then before last season, he signed a two-year contract worth $3.5 million, including a $1 million bonus and $2 million in the first season.
<intro>
The free-agency period has kicked off and it appears that the Chicago Bears have been active early on in the process.

The Chicago Bears agreed to terms with former Minnesota Viking tailback, Chester Taylor. The four-year contract is worth over $12 million, $7 million of which is guaranteed.

This move is definitely a big one for the Bears on the offensive side of the ball. Chicago struggled last year in the run game as Matt Forte failed to reach the thousand yard mark after rushing for over 1,200 yards during his rookie year. Even if Matt Forte does return to form, it will still be a good move because Taylor can provide a break and can give Forte some rest to keep him from wearing down as the season goes on. This has been a problem area with the Bears for the past two seasons.

It appears that the Bears are also trying to address some holes on the defensive side of the ball as well. Reports have it that DE Julian Peppers is close to signing with the team as well. Some scouts have mentioned that Peppers is inconsistent, but his play speaks volumes.

He has averaged double digit sack totals in six of the last eight seasons and with him on the front line, the Bears’ ability to generate a pass rush on opposing quarterbacks surely will increase. Last season for the Panthers, Julius Peppers recorded 10.5 sacks, two interceptions and forced five fumbles.

The two sides are said to be reviewing the terms of the contract and it is pending NFLPA approval. If all goes according to plan, one of the top free agents of the season will be heading to Chicago.

I feel that these two moves alone are just as important as the trade the Bears made for Cutler last year. Some teams talk about trying to get better during the off-season, but it seems that the Bears are actually putting their money where their mouth is.

Hopefully these deals will achieve the desired results.

    <intro>
According to reports, the most sought after player in free agency this year, defensive end Julius Peppers, has finalized an agreement with the Chicago Bears.

It is reportedly a six-year deal worth about $40 million over the first three years.

Bears head coach Lovie Smith personally flew to Charlotte S.C. late last night to begin the process. Peppers and smith flew back to Chicago on Friday morning and headed to Halas Hall.

Without any draft picks in the first two rounds in this years NFL draft, the Bears knew they would have to be aggressive in the free agent market an they have not disappointed.

Peppers, who has played his entire 8 year NFL career with the Carolina Panthers, comes to the Bears with 81 sacks, an average of over 10 sacks per season. He had 10.5 sacks last season and 14.5 in 2008.

The acquisition improves the Bears defensive line immediately and along with the healthy returns of pro bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher and defensive tackle Tommie Harris, the Bears could return to the dominant defense once known as the “Monsters of the Midway.”

Along with the other free agent signings the Bears have had today with running back Chester Taylor and tight end Brandon Manumaleuna, they have had a hugh showing on the first day of free agency.

All they need now is to sign a dominate safety, and Antrel Rolle and Darren Sharper are still out there. With the way the Bears have jumped out and filled some needs so far, don’t be surprised if one of these players are next on their radar.

</intro>

    <intro>
The Chicago Bears signed two of the three free agents that they coveted on Friday. Running back Chester Taylor agreed to terms Friday on a contract that will give the Bears backfield an excellent 1-2 punch with him and Matt Forte. It will also drive a nail into the division foe Vikings by weakening their backfield.

Taylor agreed to a $12.5 million, four-year contract with $7 million guaranteed.

Taylor flew into Chicago this morning and the deal was signed.

Taylor was a third-down back for the Vikings behind superstar Adrian Peterson the last three seasons, but he rushed for 1,200 yards in Minnesota in 2006 prior to Peterson’s arrival.

New offensive coordinator Mike Martz is thrilled to have Taylor and his 4.2 yards per carry average and the possibilities of a solid 1-2 combo along with Forte.

Brandon Manumaleuna, noted for being one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL, also signed a deal for a five-year contract with $6 million guaranteed with a total value of more than $17 million. The deal was in place before Manumaleuna’s plane even landed this morning at O'Hare airport in Chicago.

Two down, one to go!

Defensive end Julius Peppers, who accompanied by Bears head coach Lovie Smith, arrived in Chicago this morning as well, is expected to reach an agreement with the team soon.
</intro>

    <intro>
Bears head coach Lovie smith flew to Charlotte on Thursday night and personally accompanied defensive end Julius Peppers to Chicago on Friday.

Neither Patriots head coach Bill Belichick or Eagles head coach Andy Reid flew to South Carolina, which only testifies to how interested the Bears are in signing Peppers.

Peppers agent Carl Carey said that a contract with Peppers is Chicago’s “deal to lose.”

However, news broke on Friday morning that the Eagles and the Patriots have offered Peppers a contract as well. Terms of those deals have not been disclosed. The leakage of this news could also be a last minute ploy by Peppers agent to squeeze out a larger offer from the Bears.

Carey also said that the Bears should not look over their shoulders or worry about other teams.

The Bears covet Peppers and will do everything in their power to make sure he does not leave Chicago before he signs on the dotted line. Speculation is that he will sign with the Bears.

Peppers has said he would like to play for the Bears and be on the same defense as Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, and Tommie Harris. He also prefers to stay in a 4-3 defense scheme, which is what the Bears run.

</intro>

    <intro>
The Chicago Bears have fired their senior director of player personnel Bobby DePaul, a team official said on Monday.

DePaul, who had held that post since 2001, was the one most responsible for the engineering the trade that brought quarterback Jay Cutler to the Bears in a trade with the Denver Broncos last offseason. He helped build teams that won three division titles and one NFC Championship. The Bears made it to the Super Bowl after the 2006 season under his leadership.

The 21-year NFL Veteran came to the Bears after a four-year stint as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles player personnel department. Prior to that DePaul worked as an assistant coach with the Washington Redskins (1989-93) and with the Cincinnati Bengals (1994-96).

There was no announcement of who will be replacing DePaul as the senior director of player personnel with the Bears.
</intro>

    <intro>
Wide receiver Torry Holt, who who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday and stared with Mike Martz in "The Greatest Show on Turf" with the St. Louis Rams, said Friday it would be a "match made in heaven" if he had the opportunity to rejoin Martz, the Bears' new offensive coordinator, for the 2010 season.

Holt said he could fill the role of mentor for the young Bears receivers who will be challenged trying to learn Martz's intricate system.

"I still feel like I have the ability to get open, and get open deep," said Holt. "Under coach Martz, I know the system so well, the skill sets you have to have. In his system, you gotta be able to run. You'd better be cerebral, you'd better be able to learn and you'd better have thick skin because he's so demanding. You're working with a perfectionist. If you can't do those three things, if you're not tough, if you're not willing to go and block and run routes and be efficient and be quick, you will not play in his system."

Holt was the Jaguars' third-leading receiver with 51 receptions for 722 yards and no touchdowns last season, said he always has been a leader who helps his teammates.

"That's part of your role as a veteran player," Holt said of being a mentor to the Bears young receivers. "By them seeing me do it, by the way that I go about my business on a day-to-day basis, I think it would be very beneficial those young receivers -- in terms of creating longevity for those guys, learning how to study, what to study, learning all the intricacies of the offense.

    <intro>
It seems the Bears' players are already liking their new offensive coordinator. Martz has been praised by most Bear players, and has developed really good chemistry between WR Earl Bennett, and QB Jay Cutler.

“He made a great impression,” Bennett told chicagobears.com about his meeting with Martz at Halas Hall on Monday, the coach's first full day at the office. “He’s a mastermind offensive coach who’s going to spread the ball around and wants to take us to that next level. I’m ready to work hard for him.”

This is a very good thing to hear because a rejuvenated offense will only help the Bears in their cause to get into the playoffs next year.

One of the most important aspects of the signing was how much Martz and Cutler hit it off.

"It's such a big thing to have a coordinator and a quarterback on the same page, obviously," Martz said Monday on "Carmen, Jurko & Harry" on ESPN 1000. "If there is any kind of ill will or ill feeling or just philosophically not on the same page, I don't care who it is, it's not going to work.

Cutler has also stated a liking for Martz.

“I felt very comfortable with him,” Cutler said. “The results of his offense speak for themselves. He had a lot of success in St. Louis and his offenses made improvements each year in Detroit and San Francisco. I haven’t run his system, but I am familiar with it. I’m anxious to start digesting the playbook and getting back on the field.

The transition looks to be going very well for both Martz and the players. New faces can either be a positive or negative, depending on the player.

In a league were coaches can change so quickly, players are sometimes dismissed in the decisions of firing a coach, affecting their attitude to the franchise.

The Bears' mangement knew that changes had to be made, and knew of the potential risks they might have had to deal with.

So far no serious problems have occurred between Martz and his new players. Let's hope it stays that way.

    <intro>
The Pro Football Hall of Fame denied Richard Dent’s entry into the class of 2010, the sixth time in the last seven years he had been a finalist only to be left off the final ballot.

If offensive linemen were as effective at keeping Dent away from their quarterbacks as much as the Hall of Fame's 44-member selection board keeps blocking him from the Hall, this would not be so devastating for Dent, whose nickname was "The Colonel."

The former Bears defensive end has been eligible for eight years and a finalist for seven years, including this year.

The fact that this years hall of Fame inductees include two defensive players that do not have the credentials equal to Dent, such as Saints linebacker Rickey Jackson and Vikings defensive end John Randle has to make you wonder two things.

1. Why?

2. Will Dent ever make it into the Hall of Fame?

He was the playmaker on arguably the most dominant defense ever in the NFL. Without Dent, the Bears' 1985 season and the Super Bowl victory never happens.

When Dent retired from football, he was third all-time in career sacks. Dent averaged almost a sack per game with 0.92 sacks per start during his career. Only one defensive end in the modern era had a higher rate then Dent, Fred Dean with 1.14 sacks per start. Dent's sack ratio was higher than legendary sack men Reggie White (0.87), Bruce Smith (0.75) and Michael Strahan (0.69).

But it was not just about sacks with Dent as he was also an excellent run stopper.

Dent also had eight interceptions in his career which is tied for the most interceptions by modern-era defensive lineman. He also broke up 60 passes and forced 38 fumbles during his career. The last two numbers did not become official stats until 1994, but if you compare Dent with any defensive end in the NFL since that time, he leads in both categories.

There are only three players from the Bears dominant Super Bowl XX champions in the Hall of Fame, and one of them is a much deserved offensive player in Walter Payton. The defense, which is considered by some to be the best in the history of the NFL, has only two players from that squad in the Hall of Fame, linebacker Mike Singletary and defensive lineman Dan Hampton.

Dent was expected by many to become the third player from that dominant defense to make the Hall given the fact that he had made the cut to the final 10 last year. Dent once again made the final 10 again this year before once again being denied.

This is a travesty in all sense of the word. Richard Dent was one of the most dominant defensive ends in the history of the game, was a key ingredient in his teams success, and he definitely deserves to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Hopefully one of these years, the voting members of the Hall of Fame will get their heads out of their butts, look at the facts, and agree.

    <intro>
The search for the next Bears' defensive coordinator is over, but presents no new faces. Instead the job was given to the now former defensive line coach, Rod Marinelli.

"Rod is among the best defensive coaches in the NFL, and will be an excellent defensive coordinator for us," head coach Lovie Smith said in a statement. "We considered outside possibilities, but I didn't feel our defense would benefit the same way it will with Rod in the coordinator role.

"From the first day I became head coach of the Chicago Bears, I envisioned Rod as our defensive coordinator. I considered him for the role last year, but wanted him to have the opportunity to work exclusively with our defensive line and become acclimated to our team. He will remain in our defensive line room, but will add the responsibility of the defensive calls on game day."

With this promotion the Bears end the much publicized search for coordinators. While it wasn't a huge surprise of this promotion, there had been many reports saying that this promotion was bound to happen, I feel some kind of disappointment.

Marinelli is not an upgrade at all. He hasn't held a coordinator position in 33 years, and I remember Lovie saying that Marinelli did not really want the job anyway.

Here is what Lovie said Jan. 5th:“I’ve talked to Rod about all of the different things I am going to do. Rod would like to be in his position of being an assistant head coach, and helping me with other things like that, and coaching the defensive line. That’s a full-time job.

This promotion seems like an emergency plan. They didn't seem to have any other option other than Perry Fewell, and after he signed with the Giants, no other names came out as possible candidates.

Nonetheless the Bears are hopefully going into the right direction. The signing of Mike Martz is a huge a step into the right direction. This promotion doesn't look to be the same way.
<intro>
Devin Hester is very excited about the Bears hiring Mike Martz's as the new offensive coordinator, but he said on Thursday that he would like to go back to having a bigger kick-return role.

"I would love to get back in that situation with the return game," Hester said. "But at the same time, I'm a team player so wherever y'all want me to go, I'm ready to do it."

Hester is anxious to see what the Bears offense can do under Martz's direction, however he did caution that "it's not going to happen overnight" because the team will be learning a new system and will need to get acclimated to it.

Hester had the football world in awe after scoring 12 Touchdowns on kick and punt returns in the 2006 and 2007 seasons. This included an opening kickoff return in Super Bowl XLI against the Colts.

Hester said that becoming a full-time receiver has taken its toll.

"I know what I'm best at," Hester said. "The return game is my bread and butter, so if I had to cut back on receiving and go back to returns, that's something I would love to do."

Hester also stated that he is feeling more comfortable as a wide receiver, and said his chemistry with quarterback Jay Cutler improved as the 2009 season progressed.

However, the Hester experiment as a wide receiver, has not flourished as quickly as either he or the team expected and Hester realizes that he can make a bigger impact as a full time kick returner and a part time receiver instead of the other way around.

After scoring 12 touchdowns on kick returns his first two seasons in the league, Hester has not had a return TD the past two seasons since.

See Hetser's Return TD's here

Hester has not been known to be the smartest player on the field, and has been known to be unsure of what to do on a particular play in the receiver position in the past. Maybe the thought of learning Martz’s complicated system has Hester coming down to earth and realizing that his key to super stardom is, was, and always will be as an elite kickoff and punt returner.

Martz’s offensive system requires the receivers to do a lot of thinking, adjust their routes on the fly according to the coverage, and I think that Hester realizes that this is not his strong point and that he should just go back to being a full time returner where he does not have to think and he can let his instincts take over.

After the 2006 and 2007 seasons, Hester was already being considered the best returner of all time in the NFL because of his accomplishments.

Although Devin Hester is a gifted athlete with the speed and skills to be a receiver, however, his true star talent is returning kicks and punts. After two seasons as a full time receiver, Hester realizes that returning kicks and punts is where he truly belongs.

Hopefully the Bears brass will realize it as well.

</intro>

    <intro>
While the Bears were conducting their search for a new offensive coordinator, I was hearing a lot of unflattering things in the media about Mike Martz.

I knew that coach Lovie Smith was familiar with Martz after working with him in St. Louis. But I felt compelled to drop by Lovie’s office and tell him what I personally thought of Martz after working with him while I was with the Lions.

I just wanted to tell him my side from what I know because I started hearing all the negative stuff coming out. I didn’t believe that to be true. I didn’t have those same experiences playing for him.

I really enjoyed working with Martz while I was with the Lions and was thrilled on Monday when I heard that the Bears had hired him to replace Ron Turner.

I’m more than ecstatic. He has a brilliant offensive mind. He really knows how to get an offense going and be explosive. We’re going to flourish under his tutelage, so I can’t wait.

I would also like to add that there is a lot of media coverage about Martz’s inclination for throwing the ball. I am not worried one bit that the rushing attack will become an oversight. I got my fair share of runs in his offense when I was in Detroit.

I also caught a lot of passes out of the backfield and regardless of if it is a run or a pass, Martz likes to utilize his running backs, so I am extremely excited to have him here.

I know that Martz has a strong personality, but I don’t think that he will clash at all with quarterback Jay Cutler. Nothing’s wrong with having a strong personality. I think he and Jay are going to work well together. It’s going to be a very good combination.

I really believe that Martz’s confidence is a good thing. We were in an offensive meeting room one time, I can’t remember what week or what game it was, but he just came in the room and he had this confidence about him that made everybody else feel confident heading into that game week.

He just said, “We’re going to run the ball, we’re going to air it out, and they’re not going to be able to stop anything that we’re doing. We’re going to prepare like that this week and we’re going to play like that on Sunday,” and we did.

Mike Martz will be a great addition to our team this off season.

    <intro>
After a long process, that seemed to take forever, the Bears have finally signed a coach to one of their open coaching positions.

Mike Martz will be the new offensive coordinator, and I couldn't be more glad the Bears picked him up. Martz is most known for bringing up Kurt Warner into the elite QB we know him as today.

"Even though I've never worked with Mike Martz, I'm in favor of the Bears hiring anybody that can get us back on the right track, and hopefully back to a Super Bowl," Bears tight end Desmond Clark said. "Mike Martz has a great track record, and I'm excited to see how this offense could grow in 2010."

If the Bears' offense is going to be successful it has to start with Jay Cutler. Martz talked to Cutler last Monday, and we can sense that it went very well. It's key and very important that Cutler can get used to Martz's new playbook. The whole offense relies on the QB knowing how to run the offense.

Marshall Faulk, former St. Louis running back the time Martz was their offensive coordinator, commented on the hiring of Martz.

"If you mess up, if you don't do your job, if you don't work hard, he's extremely difficult to deal with," Faulk said during Tuesday's Super Bowl media day at Sun Life Stadium. "If you decide to take a day off, you will hate Mike Martz. If you show up for work or for a meeting and you're not prepared, you will hate him. It's that simple."

That quote made me love the signing even more. If Martz can get the Bears players to start working harder we could see a huge improvement. I always thought the players needed a fire lit under them to get them going. Martz seems to be the guy that can do that.

This is great news for the Bears and their fans, spreading some optimism for next season.

The Bears still have coaching openings at the defensive coordinator, Qb, and tight end position.
<intro>
The Chicago Bears hired Mike Martz as their new offensive coordinator on Monday.

Martz will be in charge of turning around the Bears' dismal offense and doing it as fast as possible with quarterback Jay Cutler, a quarterback that he has longed to work with, even with Cutlers interception issues this last season.

Bears running back Kevin Jones, who played under Martz with the Lions, stated to Player Press a few weeks ago that he was really hoping that they would hire him. Jones was ecstatic when he heard the news.

"They hired my main man,'' Jones said. "I love it. He was the best offensive coordinator out there.

Jones reiterated with Player Press that the perception that Martz does not run the ball much is just not true and that Martz just wants running backs who can run and catch the football.

“I think it's false information when people say he doesn't run the ball. He just has to have the back who can run the ball and catch the ball. Obviously, he did it with Marshall (Faulk). I did it in Detroit. The one season I was healthy, I had 61 catches in 12 games.''

Martz will be the third offensive coordinator since Lovie Smith took over as head coach for the Bears in 2004.

News on the street is that it could be his last if the coaching staff does not turn things around next season. Team president Ted Phillips has demanded an immediate turnaround after three straight non playoff seasons since the Bears played in the Super Bowl in 2006.

Martz and Smith have worked together before as he hired Smith as the defensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams in 2001 when he was still directing one of the most potent offenses in the history of the NFL, the Greatest Show on Turf.

Since that time, Martz was the offensive coordinator for the Lions in Detroit, and helped quarterback Jon Kitna have a 4000 yard season. He then worked in San Francisco before being fired after the 2008 season.

He took a year off from coaching last season and did some analyst work for NFL Network, criticizing Cutler for his demeanor in a postgame press conference following the season-opening loss at Green Bay.

Martz flew to Nashville on Sunday to meet personally with Cutler. They must have been on the same page as the hiring concludes and they will now be working together to reach new heights with the Bears offense.

Martz will work with new offensive line coach Mike Tice on revamping the offense and the Bears still need to hire a quarterbacks coach and a tight ends coach, as well as a defensive coordinator.
</intro>

    <intro>
The Bear's season has been over for some time now, and we still haven't heard any good news about possible offensive and defensive coordinators for the Bears.

It seems like the Bears are cursed. Everybody they show interest in decides to go with another team.

*Jeremy Bates-Hired as Seattle offensive coordinator

*Tom Clements-Packers denied permission for him to be interviewed by the Bears

*Perry Fewell-Is now the Giants defensive coordinator

*Chan Gailey-Now the head coach at Buffalo

*Jim Chaney- Decided to stay at University of Tennessee as their offensive coordinator

*Mike Nolan-Accepted the Dolphins offer as their new defensive coordinator

*Gus Bradley-Opted to stay as Seattle's defensive coordinator

Why is this happening? While nobody can really tell for sure, there have been a lot of guesses.

Some are thinking that they won't have much job security since it's unsure what will happen to Lovie after 2010. A change in head coaches almost certainly means a change in coordinators.

Regarding the offensive coordinator job, a rumor came out that some candidates were intimidated with having to work with quarterback Jay Cutler. This rumor almost seems absurd to me, but somehow I can see it being true. There's a lot riding on Cutler, and the coaches this year.

Another disappointing season will most certainly angry the Bear fans even more. They will most likely be calling for Lovie and other coaches to be fired. Again we see the job security issue pop-up.

This whole issue is making the Bears look bad. The longer the Bears are unable to sign somebody, the more the fans become weary about the team. Fans like to see their teams make smart moves fast and efficiently. When something like this drags out it makes us very weary and uncertain about how things are going to go next season.

What's even worse is they don't seem to be close to signing anybody. Like I said before, many coaches have been interviewed, but nothing has happened, leaving the door still wide open for anybody to take the jobs.
</intro>

    <intro>
Chicago Bears Johnny Knox was added to the NFC all-star roster Monday as a return specialist after fellow rookie Percy Harvin of the Minnesota Vikings pulled out of the game due to an injury.

Knox ranked second in the NFL in kickoff returns with a 29.0-yard average, trailing only the Buccaneers’ Clifton Smith (29.1). The dynamic rookie returned 32 kickoffs for 927 yards, including a 102-yarder for a touchdown in a Week 4 victory over the Lions in Soldier Field in Chicago. That play was the second longest kick return for a touchdown in Bears history.

Knox is the fourth Bears kick returner to be selected to the game in the last 11 seasons, following Glyn Milburn in 1999, Jerry Azumah in 2003, and Devin Hester in 2006.

“When I heard the news, I was speechless,” Knox said. “I was real excited to hear news like that. This was a long-term goal I had set early on in my career, but I didn’t expect it to happen this quickly.”

Knox will be the Bears’ only Pro Bowl representative. Linebacker Lance Briggs was selected for the fifth straight season, but he declined to play due to an injury.

Knox did more then just return kicks for the Bears this season. His 45 receptions tied for third most by a Bears rookie and tied for the most receptions by a Bears rookie wide receiver in team history. His 527 yards were the fifth most by a Bears rookie receiver.

Knox’s six total TDs tied for fifth among NFL rookies, and he also became the first Bears rookie since Walter Payton to score a touchdown in four straight games.

    <intro>
The Chicago Bears are looking for both offense and defensive coordinator coaches, and so far everyone that they have mentioned or interviewed has taken another position or decided to stay in their current positions.

The Bears were interested in Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements as their offensive coordinator, but he is currently under contract with the Packers and being a divisional rival they refused to allow the Bears to interview him. This is understandable.

However, after Clements, every name that has come up, been scheduled for, or actually interviewed has gone by the way side.

USC coordinator Jeremy Bates, who was scheduled for an interview with the Bears, pulled out at the last hour after agreeing to join Pete Carroll with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Bears top choice for defensive coordinator, Perry Fewell, after interviewing with the Bears, decided to become the Giants' defensive coordinator rather than join the Bears. No other names have even surfaced to this point as possible candidates for the defensive coordinator position. However, now there are rumors that Rod Marinelli, the Bears assistant head coach/defensive line coach and former head coach of the Lions might be promoted to defensive coordinator.

To me, this would be a desperate move and a last ditch effort to fill the position.

Ken Zampese, the Bengal’s quarterback coach who has been instrumental in the development of Carson Palmer, was one of the first interviews the Bears conducted for the offensive coordinator position. On Monday, Bengal’s head coach Marvin Lewis told the Chicago Tribune that Zampese will remain as the team's quarterbacks coach next season. After Zampese interviewed with the Bears for the position Jan 12-13, Lewis gave his coach a week to make a decision. Another one bites the dust.

The Bears were scheduled to interview Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson for offensive coordinator today, but he cancelled the interview altogether and decided to accept the offensive coordinator job with the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders over the Bears? This is a new low in my book.

The Bears also interviewed Rob Chudzinski, the assistant head coach/tight ends for the Chargers, but was not offered the job and has since announced that he is content with his current situation in San Diego.

Mike Martz, who just a couple of years ago was considered an offensive genius and has publicly stated that he would be interested in the position, has not been interviewed or even called by his old colleague Lovie Smith or the Bears. Would it not be at least worth a shot to talk to the guy and see what he has in mind?

Is it because working with the Bears in Chicago is just not desirable to these coaches for one reason or another, or the fact that the Bears have not made any offers and are uninterested in these coaches once they have interviewed them?

Speculation and rumors are flying around the Bears fan base and media right now and you have to wonder what the real reason behind the lack of interest is.

Are the Bears holding out in order to find the perfect fit for their team, or just not pulling the trigger fast enough?

Are coaches scared away by the speculation of the fact that if the Bears have another losing season in 2010 and do not make the playoffs, that Head Coach Lovie Smith and his entire staff would be shown the door after the season?

Are the Bears just not impressed with the candidates that they have interviewed so far?

Are the Bears possibly waiting for a particular coach from either the Colts or the Saints and therefore have to wait until after the Super Bowl? The name that is currently being mentioned is Clyde Christensen, the Colts' assistant head coach/wide receivers.

All of these questions come into play when trying to figure out why the Bears have not yet filled either of their open coordinator positions. However, at this time, there are just no answers.
<intro>
Bears defensive end Gaines Adams died early Sunday morning of cardiac arrest resulting from an enlarged heart. Adams, 26, was taken to the emergency room at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood county S.C. at 7:14 a.m. ET and was pronounced dead at 8:21 a.m..

Adams owned a house in Greenwood and a County Sheriff's investigator said that Adams and his girlfriend were at the home at the time, and that the girlfriend reportedly made the call to 911 at around 7 a.m.

It has been reported that toxicology tests are being run by the State Law Enforcement Division, though drug or alcohol use is not suspected as a factor in Adams' death. The results of those tests will probably not be available for at least two months.

Prior to his death Sunday morning, nobody was aware of any kind of medical condition with Adams.

The Chicago Bears issued a statement Sunday afternoon, saying, "We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines' passing. Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told the Los Angeles Time's Sam Farmer: "It's a sad outcome. He was a terrific young man. I met him at the draft when he came in, and he stood out. He was a very caring individual. I'd seen him a couple of times, most recently in Chicago.

"He seemed like a very genuine, nice man," Goodell continued. "He seemed focused on being a good person, not just an NFL player. I was always taken with him."

Adams was traded to Chicago from Tampa Bay in exchange for a 2010 second-round draft pick, and his unexpected death shocked teammates.

Adams, a star player at Clemson University, was the fourth pick of the 2007 draft by the Buccaneers. The Bears traded for him in October, intent on rebuilding their pass rush around him.

"It's crazy," Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said. "I didn't know him that well because he came in during the middle of the season. But I did know him. I still saw him every day when I went into work. It's just weird. I had a teammate die when I was in college. You just don't know how to handle it. It's just sad, man. It's a bad deal."

On his Twitter page, Bears' Alex Brown posted, "Please send out your prayers to Gaines Adams family he was a great teammate and will be missed. Cherish life, we only get one. God Bless!"

On his Twitter page, Bears' Jason McKie posted: "please keep Gaines Adams family in your prayers he was a great person and teammate..life is too short ...we love you Gaines."

Former Bucs linebacker Derrick Brooks was a mentor to Adams both on and off the field said, "All the time he was in Tampa it was always about him as a player and what he did and didn't do as the fourth pick in the draft,'' Brooks told the Tampa Tribune.The people didn't get to know who he really was or how connected he was with his hometown and how he was starting to work toward giving back to his community."

Buccaneers Head Coach Raheem Morris said, "Gaines will be missed by all of us, especially by his teammates in our locker room. He was a true team player and a positive influence to everyone he met. My prayers go out to his family."

Buccaneers Cornerback Ronde Barber said, "Gaines was a quiet, humble kid and is far too young to be gone. He had so much potential that had yet to be achieved and I am very sad that the full extent of his life won't be realized."

Former Clemson assistant coach Ron West said "This was the kind of kid that you wanted to be your son,'' said West, Adams' position coach for several years with the Tigers. "He was a beautiful kid.''

Tommy Bowden, Adams' head coach at Clemson when he played there, said he couldn't believe the young player was gone.

"I just couldn't believe it was Gaines," Bowden said. "I will always remember the smile he had on his face and I will always remember his patience."

Adams did not have any reported prior medical issues that would have revealed heart issues.

</intro>

    <intro>
It was difficult watching the season and not being able to play and help out the team. I definitely think that if I could have been there, I could have helped the team’s running game and helped to make a difference in the season.

But injuries happen and there was really nothing I could do about it except to do my best and rehab the ankle so I would be ready for next year.

My ankle is feeling a lot better and I just started running a couple of weeks ago and it is right on pace with being ready for all of the Bears’ mini-camps and training camps for the 2010 season.

The Bears made a lot of coaching changes and I am curious as to who they might hire as the new offensive coordinator. Hopefully they will hire someone with a high-powered offensive mind that will improve the overall scheme and we can move forward and have a better year offensively next season.

This season as a bystander, I liked what I saw for the most part and saw a lot of talent that, after a year of working with one another and having a year under their belts, we can all grow and improve together as a team.

The young wide receivers impressed me a lot, they stepped up and got better from game to game. The receivers looked more comfortable and made some big plays, especially towards the end of the season.

I think that some of the injuries, especially on the defensive side of the ball, played a part in the struggles we had this season, but this is the NFL and you can’t use that as an excuse. But it was a learning experience for everyone and we can’t let injuries affect us as much as they did this past season.

Even though Jay Cutler had his struggles at times this season, he is a great quarterback and it was his first season with the team. I think that next season we will see the real Jay Cutler on the field and he will help us to be a better team and win more games.

After all of this time off, I really look forward to the 2010 season and getting back on the field and helping the team win. I have been working very hard to get back and I am ready to go.
